Frequently Asked Questions
• Do Icelandic Sheepdogs Shed?
Yes, They are a northern breed and blow their entire coat twice a year. The rest of the time shedding is minimal if you are proactive about bathing and brushing. Their coats do not require a lot of effort to maintain.
• Would an Icelandic Sheepdog do well living in an apartment?
There is no blanket answer for this question. They 'can' do well with the right person. Someone who is able to get them out exercise them properly would likely be just fine. But it's important to remember that they are a vocal breed and often alarm bark at noises or when their owners try to leave them home for the day. If you are not able to stay on top of training and keep them from becoming a nuisance it's not a good idea to have one in an apartment.
• How big do Icelandic Sheepdogs get?
Males are up to 18 inches tall and can weigh 30-40lbs. Females are 16.5 inches tall and 25-30lbs on average.
• What is the best thing about this breed?
They are so so so happy all of the time! You can not look at that happy face and not smile! They are incredibly sweet and versatile dogs, always ready for adventure. My experience with my dogs is that they are able to do very well in sports, but have a nice "off switch" in the house. They are ok whether we are spending the day on the couch watching Netflix or going hiking all day, they just want to be a part of whatever you are doing. They are generally friendly with other dogs, people, and animals, making them very easy to take places.
• What is the worst thing about this breed?
The barking. Though it can be managed to an extent, it's an ingrained trait that most dogs in the breed will be vocal or prone to vocalizing. We spend a lot of time reinforcing 'quiet' and rewarding them for choosing to ignore things rather than bark about them.
• How much does the average Icelandic Sheepdog cost?
The current price range for an Icelandic sheepdog is $1500 - $3000
